Pithora Painting is a religious painting of the tribals of chorvana, in an interior
village of Chhotaudaipur. With the help of Gujarat State Handloom and Handicraft
Development Corporation, training was imparted to 25 artisans. The artisans used
to draw beautiful religious pictures and stories on their walls, once their wish
was accomplished in order, to please the God called “Pithoro”.
The artisans are now able to replicate these wall pictures onto different materials
like paper and fabric. The have been able to come up with interesting products like
photo frames, decorative trays, wall paintings etc. which have high marketability.
Our artisans do work on Bead work, Bamboo, Strings, Embroidery, Tribal painting, Wood carving,
Paper machei, Leaf basket, Jute, Wood and bamboo furniture etc.

New design development has taken place in wood carving sector. These artisans from
Chhotaudaipur were making statues mainly human sculptures in memory of their elders
and relatives. Having done research innovative products with their existing skills
were identified like lamps, coasters, bookends, and showpieces. As a result a design
workshop was conducted for two months for 7 artisans under GSHHC and the number
of people engaged in this occupation today are 10 after this training.

Block Printing was totally a new skill for these artisans. According to an expert
the sunlight in the region was conducive for good color results on fabric and he
was also of the opinion that water was not a worrisome issue to tackle as it could
be managed by recycling and treating. Hence in collaboration with DRDA, a one-month
training was held at Limakheda on an exploratory basis and then this was carried
forward under GSHHDC to 6 months training in Bordi with 25 more persons seeing the
potential enthusiastically joined.

Research work was done under SAHAJ design cell and designers gave their valuable
inputs from time to time throughout the year. The designers from NIFT were - Nandini
Jaiyal, Mridul Sharma, Santosh Kumar, Abhijeet, Avinash and those from NID were
- Hitesh Desai, Uma De and from Fine Arts were Ami Gandhi. Main design development
happened on products like jewelry, furniture, embroidery, garments and toys.

New design development for the national market was of utmost priority during the
year. Garments and Home Furnishings were developed keeping in mind upper elite clientele.
Similarly Imitation and Fashion Jewelry was targeted for upper and middle class
segment. A new segment of Trendy Furniture for gardens was researched and designed.
Design development at cluster happened through a NIFT designer who developed number
of designs in Jewelry for artisans at village Nagarala, a range of Lifestyle products
at Jesawada cluster and at village Vajelav, and Garments at Garabada cluster.

Strings, Cushion covers, Christmas decorations and Key chains were the products,
which were designed keeping in mind the international market tastes.
Design Development took place at various clusters for individual products like a
variety of stuffed strings from traditional to contemporary designs. Key chains
were developed at Garabada, Cushion covers were designed with inputs from designers
at Vajelav cluster, and Christmas Decorations at Jalat cluster.
