For nearly two decades now crafts like Bead jewelry, Bamboo artifacts, Quilts, Decorative
pieces and Fashion accessories have been promoted among women’s groups; the activity
that was started with 14 women of two groups in the villages of Sahada and Bhamatalai.
With a better market access, thanks to SAHAJ’s excellent networking, these crafts
have found greater acceptability among masses, offering sustainable livelihoods
to tribal women.
|
|
|
SAHAJ is today able to mobilize 170 groups; close to 2700 tribal members directly
from 52 remote villages as on year ending 2007. Among these about 10% of the groups
are formed by male members who were inspired by successful women groups. This has
set an example for others to follow.
Each woman in the group earns on an average Rs. 500-1000 per month, if she works
for about 2-3 hours a day along with agriculture and other household chores. A woman
can earn close to Rs.3000-4000 per month if she can devote full time to this craft
activity.
A major transition is witnessed in this arid area of Dahod district, which has emerged
as a major craft-producing hub on the map of Gujarat after Kutch. Apart from the
increased income opportunities within the village, women have also gained social
status within their family, community and various government and banking institutions.

Socio-Economic empowerment of the woman through art and craft based activities to
secure her position in society where she can think independently, become a role
model for future generations, and above all does not have to prove herself because
of her gender.
SAHAJ envisions a society where every man and woman supports each other and shares
every aspect of life equitably.
